About GemVal

Passionate About Gems

Where it all began

GemVal was founded in 2009 by Chris Evans, whose deep appreciation for jewellery and fascination with gemstones was sparked by regular family trips to the gem fields of Central Queensland. Her hands-on experience and natural curiosity led her to become a qualified Gemmologist and valuer, establishing GemVal as a trusted name in gemstone and jewellery valuations.

Growth through shared passion

As the business grew, so did its reputation — leading to the expansion of the team and the inclusion of Janet Young, a fellow gem enthusiast with a shared commitment to professional, accurate, and ethical valuations. After several years working alongside Chris, Janet has proudly taken on the role of business owner and principal valuer at GemVal.

Meet Janet Young

Janet’s journey into gemmology was shaped by time spent on the gem fields and a fortuitous introduction to Chris and Dave. She completed her Gemmology Appraiser and Registered Gemmologist Appraiser courses through the International School of Gemology (ISG), before earning additional qualifications, including practical diamond grading and a Gemmology Diploma from the Gemmological Association of Australia (GAA), and becoming a fellow of the GAA (FGAA). Janet also holds a Valuing Diploma through the National Council of Jewellery Valuers (NCJV).

Achieving her dream job later in life has been a rewarding and fulfilling path — one marked by dedication, study, and a lifelong love for all things gem-related.
